Applewood Farm is located in Crabapple, GA, about 12 miles North of the Atlanta Perimeter highway, Interstate 285. We recommend that large rigs drive the major Interstates to the Atlanta perimeter I-285 and then take GA-400 North. There are back roads to cut across from I-75 or I-85, but there are many turns and stop lights and although it is a few less miles, it can take longer. Approaching Atlanta from the South, we also recommend using the perimeter I-285 to avoid the congestion of going through down town Atlanta. Atlanta Interstate traffic is very congested in the morning and evening rush hours and it is best to time arrivals to avoid Atlanta rush hours.
Current negative Coggins and vaccination records are required and must be confirmed prior to unloading any horse on the premises. To avoid delay, it is best to fax them to the manager ahead of time to make sure they are in order. Contact the manager if there are any questions about health paperwork.
Shippers should make specific contact AHEAD OF TIME with our stable manager. The stable manager will actually meet the shipper to accept horses and must be involved up front in the arrangements. Shippers should call the stable manager when they are about 2 hours out to advise they will be arriving soon and to get the code for security gate.
Landrum Road is a well maintained gravel road with sharp turns. Long rigs can easily pass if drivers look ahead and anticipate the curves. The farm driveway also has tight turns. Shipping vans over 40 feet, or in times of bad visibility, should load/unload at the farm entrance. Note: Long rigs hauled by very long wheelbase tractors such as those with large sleeper compartments should unload at the farm entrance as well.
Owners confirm with shipper ahead of time: For safety reasons, shippers who will not drive on gravel roads will not be permitted to unload on Birmingham Highway and delivery will be refused.
After unloading at the farm entrance, vans can continue straight ahead on Landrum Road about 1/4 mile and turn right when it dead ends onto the paved road Freemanville. Go straight on Freemanville about 1 mile and turn right onto Mayfield at the stop light. This takes you back to the Crabapple intersection where you originally came in.
Hotels nearby We usually recommend the Fairfield Inn by Marriott 770.663.4000 for our guests as it is about 10 minutes away from the farm, has predictable quality, and reasonable pricing for short stays. It is best to call ahead for reservations. There is a residence suite style place nearby as well that we recommend for week or month long stays, see below. Directions to/from Fairfield Inn
